Bomb Scare Keeps Steaua Bucharest Team Awake All Night

Posted by carlyluvsunited on Friday, 24 July 2009

A hoax bomb threat caused dozens of guests - among them the Romanian football team Steaua Bucharest - to evacuate their central Budapest hotel in the dead of night, the local news agency MTI reported Thursday.

The guests were only allowed to return to their rooms at 4 a.m. after a thorough search had been conducted, police press officer Laszlo Kalyo said.

Steaua Bucharest are in the Hungarian capital to play the second leg of a Europa League qualification match against the Budapest team Ujpest Thursday. The Romanian side won the first leg 2-0 in Bucharest last week.

An unknown caller phoned the emergency services from a provincial number at around midnight on Wednesday, claiming to have planted a bomb in the city centre hotel, the police said.

Economic Meltdown

Posted by carlyluvsunited on Wednesday, 25 March 2009

I read this today in The Guardian and it kind of upset me. After all the hard work people from my country have put in to try to make ourselves good members of the EU and able to stand on our own two feet proud of what we have achieved and proud of what we have come through as a nation, and now, due to problems beyond our control we have had to go and ask for help from the EU in the shape of cash loans to prop up our economy. We are very proud people and to be forced to do this is something we are not happy with.....but we have faced worse crises than this and come through it.

The European Union, IMF and World Bank today bailed out Romania with a €20bn (£18.5bn) loan in return for severe cuts in public spending and wages.

Romania becomes the third EU country to turn for financial assistance in the current recession after Hungary and Latvia which have together received €9.6bn from Brussels. Latvia has also been given €2.2bn from individual EU countries.

Today's package sees the IMF put up €13bn, the EU €5bn and the World Bank €1bn. The European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and other creditors are committing the extra €1bn.

East European countries in the EU are in economic freefall as the slump deepens in the west which is the main source of their exports. Business sentiment in Germany, the eurozone's biggest economy, today fell to a 27-year low.

"I am pleased that it was possible to come to an agreement rapidly on a significant financial assistance package," said Joaquín Almunia, EU economic and monetary affairs commissioner.

He added: "I welcome the commitment by the Romanian authorities to implement a major programme of economic adjustment aimed at bringing the economy to a sound and sustainable growth path, including through strengthening financial sector supervision.

"I am aware of the hardships that Romania and its citizens are encountering at this time of crisis but I am confident that, with the right policies and with the help of the EU and other international bodies, they will emerge stronger."

Romania, among the poorest of the EU's 27 members, is being urged to recapitalise its banks, boost its deposit guarantee scheme and toughen supervision, including winding-up laws.

It is also urged to undertake "an orderly correction of imbalances in the medium term" and "improve competitiveness" – IMF-speak for savage wage cuts. Latvians are experiencing cuts of between 20% and 30% in their incomes.

At the core of the programme is a commitment by Bucharest to limit the budget deficit to 5.1% this year and to cut it further to 3% – the ceiling imposed by the Maastricht treaty – in 2011. Other measures imposed as a condition of the loan are due to be outlined later.

The European commission and Ecofin, the council of economic and finance ministers, said the Romanian financial sector should continue to provide adequate funding of institutions and of the wider economy.

"In this context we would very much welcome the confirmation of the long-term commitment of foreign parent banks to Romania and to support their subsidiaries in the country," they said in a joint statement. Western banks have €1.5tn in outstanding loans to eastern Europe.

Last week, in anticipation of further demands as the crisis deepens, the EU summit agreed to double a special fund for countries in balance of payments difficulties to €50bn.

Arad

Posted by carlyluvsunited on Friday, 6 March 2009

Arad was first mentioned in documents in the 11th century.

The Mongol invasion of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241 showed that defensive fortifications were needed, and in the second half of the 13th century stone fortresses at Soimos (Solymos), Siria (Világos), and Dezna (Dézna) were built.

The Ottoman Empire conquered the region from Hungary in 1551 and kept it until the Peace of Karlowitz of 1699. She was also an eyalet center, which compromised sanjaks of Varad (Arad), Logoş, Kacaş, Beşlek and Yanova since 1660 until 1697, when she was captured by Austrians during Ottoman-Habsburg wars (1683-1699).

After 1699, the city was ruled by the Habsburg Monarchy. According to 1720 data, the population of the city was composed of 177 German families, 162 Serbian, and 35 Hungarian.

The new fortress was built between 1763 and 1783. Although it was small, it proved formidable having played a great role in the Hungarian struggle for independence in 1849. The city possesses a museum containing relics of this war of independence.

Bravely defended by the Austrian general Berger until the end of July 1849, it was captured by the Hungarian rebels, who made it their headquarters during the latter part of the revolution. It was from Arad that Lajos Kossuth issued his famous proclamation (11 August 1849), and where he handed over the supreme military and civil power to Artúr Görgey. The fortress was recaptured shortly after the surrender of Görgey to the Russians at Şiria/Világos and is now used as an ammunition depot.

Thirteen rebel generals were executed there on 6 October 1849, by order of the Austrian general Julius Jacob von Haynau. These men are known collectively as the 13 Martyrs of Arad, and since then Arad is considered the "Hungarian Golgotha". One of the public squares contains a martyrs' monument, erected in their memory. It consists of a colossal figure of Hungary, with four allegorical groups, and medallions of the executed generals.

Arad enjoyed a great economic development. In 1834 it was declared a "free royal town" by Emperor Francis I of Austria.

Aradu Nou / Újarad ("New Arad"), situated on the opposite bank of the Mureş/Maros, is a suburb of Arad, to which it is connected by a bridge. It was founded during the Turkish wars of the 17th century. The works erected by the Turks for the capture of the fortress of Arad formed the nucleus of the new settlement.

In 1910, the town had 63,166 inhabitants: 46,085 (73%) Hungarians, 10,279 (16.2%) Romanians, 4,365 (7%) Germans.

Traian Besescu In Hungary

traian besecu visit hungary
Romania's President Traian Basescu (Left) visits
Siluan Manuila, the bishop of Saint Nicholas Cath-
edral, in Gyula, about 240 km (150 miles) east of
Budapest, February 3, 2009. Basescu is on a two
-day official visit to Hungary.

The first recorded reference to Gyula was in a
document dated 1313.

To the east of the town centre stands the old fort-
ress (13th century), now a cultural centre and a
tourist attraction. Nearby, there are thermal spas
known for their therapeutic effects.

In Gyula one may admire "Nicolae Bălcescu"
High School designed by Szabó Jen. The archi-
tecture resembles that of Transylvanian wooden
churches. Not very far is the Romanian Orthodox
Cathedral, erected in 1867.

Gyula is home to Hungary's second oldest cake
shop, and has a town centre comprising numerous
small pedestrianised squares, many of which have
large water fountains.

The 'End Of Romania' Sign

Posted by carlyluvsunited on Monday, 6 October 2008

A picture of this quite famous road sign taken in
2002 and here, again in 2008.

It looks a bit old and run down, but locals
will not let anyone touch it.

It is situated at the tripoint of Romania-Hungary-Serbia.

If you sit at the bottom of this sign and wrap
your legs around it, you will actually be in
three countries at the same time !!
